How to Avoid Motion Sickness on a Plane, According to a Flight Attendant

For some travelers, motion sickness during a flight can be a real mood-killer. But don’t worry—there are some handy tips from a British Airways flight attendant that can help you enjoy a smoother, less nauseating flight experience.

In an interview with travel agency Ocean Florida (quoted by Daily Mail), the flight attendant shared that passengers prone to motion sickness should avoid sitting at the back of the plane.
“Turbulence is usually felt more in the rear,” she explained, as reported by People.

So, where’s the best place to sit?

She recommends choosing a seat near the wings, which is the middle section of the cabin. That area tends to be more stable. She also suggests opting for an aisle seat.
“Aisle seats help reduce anxiety about heights and allow you to move around more easily, which can help with feelings of tightness or claustrophobia,” she added.

This advice aligns with what Dramamine’s official website (a well-known motion sickness remedy) says—seats near the wings or at the front of the plane typically feel less of the bumps and jolts caused by turbulence.

Another reason to avoid the back? That’s where the toilets are—meaning you might have to deal with unpleasant smells, which can definitely make nausea worse.

Extra Tips from the Flight Attendant

Beyond just picking the right seat, here are more simple ways to prevent air sickness:

  • Use the air vent above your seat.
“Cool air can reduce the chance of motion sickness, so we always recommend keeping that overhead air vent on,” she said.
  • Avoid greasy or spicy food before and during the flight. These can upset your stomach even more at high altitudes.
  • Limit screen time and reading. Too much focus on screens or books while flying can trigger dizziness or nausea.
  • Ask for ginger tea or ginger ale. Ginger is a natural remedy known to help calm the stomach and reduce nausea. Flight attendants will often have it on hand.

Air sickness can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, and even fatigue. But with a few smart moves, you can avoid all that and have a way more comfortable flight.
