New Study Links Sugary and Artificially Sweetened Beverages to Increased Risk of Depression and Anxiety

Could your daily drink be affecting your mental health? A new study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders suggests that sugary and artificially sweetened beverages may significantly raise the risk of depression and anxiety, especially in younger and middle-aged adults.

Researchers found that individuals under 60 who consumed more than one sugar-sweetened drink per day had a 14% higher risk of developing depression, while those consuming artificially sweetened beverages saw an even greater risk increase—up to 23%.

Healthier Beverage Choices May Lower Mental Health Risks

In contrast, coffee and pure fruit or vegetable juices were associated with a reduced risk of depression and anxiety across all age groups. Drinking more than one serving of coffee or pure juice daily reduced depression risk by 12% to 19% in adults under 60.

For older adults (60+), swapping milk or sugar-sweetened drinks for coffee or juice also showed positive mental health outcomes. These findings highlight the impact of beverage choices on mental health and underscore the potential of simple dietary changes in managing depression and anxiety symptoms.

Gut-Brain Connection: Why What You Drink Matters

The study strengthens the growing scientific consensus around the gut-brain axis—the idea that gut health directly influences mental health. Foods and drinks high in added sugar or artificial sweeteners may negatively impact the gut microbiome, potentially leading to increased stress, mood disorders, and poor emotional regulation.

Meanwhile, drinks like black coffee and nutrient-rich juices support a healthier gut and may promote better emotional resilience and mental clarity.

Takeaway for Mental Wellness and Diet

For those seeking natural ways to support mental health, reducing intake of soda, energy drinks, and other sweetened beverages may be an effective strategy. Instead, consider reaching for black coffee, fresh vegetable or fruit juice, or other low-sugar, high-antioxidant beverages to help support both physical and emotional well-being.
