Angie Stone, who received multiple Grammy nominations throughout her career, has passed away at the age of 63 following a car accident, according to her daughter.
“My mommy is gone,” her daughter, Diamond Stone, shared in an emotional Facebook post.
Reports indicate that Stone suffered fatal injuries when a van she was traveling in overturned early Saturday morning in Alabama. The incident occurred after she had performed at an event.
Angie Stone, known for hits such as No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Wish I Didn’t Miss You, earned three Grammy nominations during her career. She first gained recognition in the 1970s as a member of the all-female hip-hop trio The Sequence.
One of the group’s most notable tracks, Funk You Up, reached No. 15 on Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles chart.
Her daughter, who also performs under the name Ladi Diamond, expressed her grief on Facebook, saying she felt “numb.” Just hours earlier, she had requested prayers for her family while traveling.
A representative for the singer informed the BBC that her family had gathered in Montgomery, Alabama, and would provide further updates soon.
Guy Todd Williams, better known as Rahiem from the legendary hip-hop group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, revealed that around nine other passengers were in the van at the time of the crash.
“She made a lasting impact on the music industry, starting as a member of the pioneering rap group Sequence,” Williams said.
Angie Stone was the only casualty in the accident, he confirmed.
Authorities in Montgomery have been contacted for more details.
Beyond her music career, Stone also found success in the film industry.
She made her big-screen debut in The Hot Chick (2002), a comedy featuring Rob Schneider, Rachel McAdams, and Anna Faris.
The following year, she appeared in The Fighting Temptations alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyoncé.
