Rosie O’Donnell has officially left the United States for a fresh start in Ireland, confirming that she and her 12-year-old child, Dakota (nicknamed Clay), relocated on January 15, 2025. In a TikTok video posted on March 11, the comedian and former talk show host opened up about her decision to leave the U.S. and shared insights into her new life abroad.
Rosie O’Donnell’s Big Move to Ireland
The Emmy-winning star revealed that her Irish heritage played a key role in her relocation, as she is currently in the process of applying for Irish citizenship. O’Donnell expressed gratitude for the warm welcome she has received, saying:
“The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming. And I’m very grateful.”
While she hadn’t originally planned on moving to Dublin, she explained that the political climate in the U.S. after the 2024 election influenced her decision.

O’Donnell, a longtime LGBTQ+ rights activist and outspoken political commentator, cited concerns over equality and political turmoil in the United States as a driving factor behind her move.
“I was never someone who thought I would move to another country. But that’s what I decided would be best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are.”
While she is happy with her decision, she admitted to missing her older children, Parker (29), Chelsea (27), Blake (25), and Vivienne (22), as well as her close friends back home.
“When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”

Now settling into life in Dublin, Ireland, O’Donnell has been adjusting to her new surroundings. She shared that she has already met new people and described the experience as exciting yet challenging.
In a now-private March 7 Instagram post, she sparked rumors of her move by posting a picture of Dakota in a car, seemingly heading to school. She also shared a selfie with her newly purchased car, humorously writing:

Although O’Donnell is embracing her new chapter in Ireland, she hasn’t ruled out a return to the U.S. in the future. However, she made it clear that her decision will depend on political and social changes in America.
