Ryan Reynolds Calls Logan the Greatest Comic Book Movie as It Arrives on Max

Max is set to stream one of the most celebrated comic book films ever, according to none other than Ryan Reynolds. The acclaimed X-Men spinoff, Logan, will be available on the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streaming service starting April 1, adding to the excitement of superhero fans everywhere.

Ryan Reynolds’ High Praise for Logan

Before his return as Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds made it clear that he holds Logan in the highest regard. In a 2024 interview with Total Film, Reynolds called it “potentially the greatest comic book adaptation ever made.” His endorsement further cements Logan’s reputation as a standout superhero film.

Logan Arrives on Max

Beginning April 1, Max subscribers will have access to Logan (2017), the third and final installment in Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine trilogy. The film was originally meant to serve as a swan song for both Jackman’s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X before their recent returns in Deadpool & Wolverine and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Inspired by the Old Man Logan comic book storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, the movie follows an aged Wolverine and a gravely ill Professor X as they protect a young mutant, Laura (Dafne Keen), from the merciless Reavers.

A Groundbreaking Superhero Film

Directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Green and Scott Frank, Logan took a bold step by embracing an R-rating, similar to Deadpool. Despite its adult-oriented content, Logan was a massive commercial success, earning nearly $620 million worldwide and ranking as the ninth highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Critically, the movie was hailed as one of the best comic book adaptations, boasting a 93% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the 90th Academy Awards, it became the first live-action superhero movie to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay—a historic achievement that set it apart from other comic book films.

What’s Next for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine?

Having played Logan/Wolverine for over 24 years, Hugh Jackman is returning for his tenth appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). While Jackman’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains uncertain, rumors suggest he could make an appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars, possibly alongside other legacy Marvel actors like Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast.

Director Shawn Levy has hinted at a potential Deadpool & Wolverine sequel, though such a project likely won’t happen until after Marvel’s Multiverse Saga concludes. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has stated that while there are “no immediate plans” to recast Wolverine, a new actor will inevitably take on the role in the future.

For now, fans can celebrate Ryan Reynolds’ Logan praise and revisit one of the greatest comic book movies ever made when it hits Max on April 1.
