Sidney Poitier’s Advice to Eddie Murphy: Why He Turned Down Malcolm X

In the early 1990s, as plans for a film adaptation of The Autobiography of Malcolm X were underway, actor and comedian Eddie Murphy was approached to portray author Alex Haley. During this period, Murphy sought counsel from legendary actor Sidney Poitier regarding the potential role. Sidney Poitier’s advice to Eddie Murphy was clear—he urged Murphy to decline the role, emphasizing the importance of preserving his unique comedic presence in Hollywood. Poitier remarked, “You are not Denzel, and you are not Morgan. You are a breath of fresh air. And don’t f— with that.”

This guidance led Murphy to turn down the role, allowing him to continue focusing on his comedic career. The film Malcolm X eventually materialized under director Spike Lee, with Denzel Washington delivering a critically acclaimed performance in the titular role.

Reflecting on Sidney Poitier’s advice to Eddie Murphy, the comedian acknowledged the challenges that seasoned entertainers like Poitier faced in mentoring him due to his unprecedented success as a young Black comedian in Hollywood. He noted, “I was in uncharted waters… They didn’t have a reference for me.”

This episode underscores the significance of mentorship in the entertainment industry and highlights the delicate balance actors must maintain when navigating between comedic and dramatic roles.
