WhatsApp is developing a new feature that allows users to answer video calls with their camera turned off, enhancing privacy and flexibility during calls.
Currently, when receiving a video call on WhatsApp, the front camera activates automatically, requiring users to manually disable it after answering if they prefer an audio-only interaction. This upcoming feature addresses this concern by introducing an option to turn off the camera before accepting the call.
In the latest beta version (2.25.7.3 for Android), users will see a “Turn off your video” option when receiving a video call. Selecting this will accept the call in voice-only mode. Additionally, an “Accept without video” prompt will be displayed, allowing users to start the call without being seen. If they change their mind during the call, they can tap “Turn on your video” to switch back to video mode.
This enhancement is timely, especially considering the rise of scams where malicious actors exploit video calls to blackmail individuals. For instance, in India, there have been reports of scammers initiating video calls displaying explicit content, capturing screenshots with the victim’s face, and threatening to expose them unless a ransom is paid.
While WhatsApp hasn’t officially announced when this feature will roll out to the public, its utility suggests it won’t be long before it becomes available to all users.
